Bed Bugs

Bed bugs, scientifically known as Cimex lectularius, are small, flat, parasitic insects that primarily feed on human and animal blood during sleep. These pests are reddish-brown, wingless, and can survive months without feeding. They are found globally, including in both developed and developing regions and are not restricted by the cleanliness levels of their environment. Commonly residing within 8 feet of sleeping areas, they can be found in homes, hotels, and public transport, hiding in mattress seams, furniture crevices, and other nearby objects. Despite not transmitting diseases, bed bugs can cause significant discomfort through itching and potential secondary infections from scratching. Identifying an infestation involves spotting bite marks, shed exoskeletons, rusty blood spots, or a sweet musty odor. Bed bugs are typically spread through travel, hitching rides in luggage and clothing.
